The Cat Rescuer of the Day
The Cat Rescuers is an upcoming documentary about four dedicated volunteers who are saving the lives of hundreds of abandoned and feral cats on the streets of Brooklyn.
Our film calls attention to a global issue being addressed by thousands of organizers and heroic human beings – those who do TNR, volunteer at shelters, take on fosters, what have you. Since we could only put a fraction of those wonderful people in our film, we’ve created the Cat Rescuer of the Day program to celebrate the efforts of as many as possible.
Meet Today’s Rescuer: Molly of Reno, NV!
Rescue Efforts:
In 2001, I began working with the local SPCA and a feral cat group called Community Cats to help trap and release feral cats on the campus of University of Nevada. There were several cats who were reproducing so I (and several others) began to do T&R which helped enormously. I took four cats off campus who became domesticated eventually and are/were very warm and caring. Reno animal shelters became “no kill” because of this early work. Fosters are key to the success of these programs. Now, I’m no longer on campus but have just been rescued by a feral adult male. He’s been through T&R as can be seen by his tipped ear. After many months, he is my lap kitty. My cats were ambassador cats which enabled this progress.
One Rescue I’ll Never Forget Was…
Peaches was my ginger girl who I found on campus as a skinny six month old missing one eye. I took her in to SPCA, took her home to a sunny bedroom where touching her nose poking out from a blanket changed her heart towards me. In two weeks, she would cuddle right against my neck. Sweet soul, such beauty. She passed in my arms two years ago.
One Thing I wish People Understood about Cats or Cat Rescuing Is…
I wish people understood that calm, patient, loving treatment is what is required to bring ferals and frightened cats into the fold of the home. They require space and some gentle coercion but mostly, they need security. They are creatures of habit so they need us to be consistent.
When I’m Not Rescuing Cats, I Like to…
I’m in a home where my life is all about rescued cats. I do photography, but was precious in the field of education. I’m putting together photography books on wild horses, cats, and all of this is centered on the concepts of kindness, animal welfare, and gratitude.
I’m Looking Forward to The Cat Rescuers Film Because…
It’s personal to me and I’m hoping more people will learn how important it is to: 1. spay and neuter; 2. Adopt; 3. Do T&R; 4. Change the perception that cats are loners and not loving to one that shows they’re social creatures and very loving.
